As recently as March of 2020, the pixelated uniform worn mainly in Afghanistan was retired and now soldiers just wear a green and brown uniform. Navy personnel no longer wear the “blueberry” uniform and instead wear a green and black digital uniform.

History

Americans wore blue coats as a form of camouflage during the Spanish-American war. It was mainly a differentiator between them and the enemy instead of a way to blend in. Brown and green uniforms didn’t become popular until. 1914, when the French wanted to camouflage their weapons from their enemies.

During World War 1, it became even more important to advance clothing technology and wear camouflage because of aerial surveillance. It wasn’t as heavily used by civilians yet, but was put on vehicles and weapons. It wasn’t really standardized until World War 2 when military personnel wore what was originally called the “frog” suit. It was brown and green and covered everything, head to toe.

Over time the uniform has taken on several varieties of browns and greens, until the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, when digital printing was created to block out personnel from binoculars and satellite imaging.

The pattern on most modern uniforms involves a pixelated version of camo that blends into the ground to prevent satellites from detecting people on the ground. It is also used on military gear and vehicles.

Hunting camo comes in a wider variety of colors because of the different seasons and terrains that people hunt in. Each season looks drastically different for certain states and climates, so camo needs to be different and less universal for everyone. Camo can be purchased in stores such as Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shop. Camo is sold for everyone, unlike camo for the military because their camo is designed specifically to fight against humans.

History

Military camo was previously used for hunting, but it wasn’t as effective at hiding hunters from deer and other wild animals. Believe it or not, hunting camo didn’t come into creation until the early 1970’s, during which hunters experimented with colors and dip-dying in order to find the right combination.

There was a great deal of trial and error before the right combination was found. It wasn’t until around 1979 that the common tree pattern (created by Jim Crumley) was put onto the clothing of hunters.

There are lots of different brands of camouflage out there, and each one serves different purposes for the variety of hunting seasons. One of the most popular brands on the market is Mossy Oak Obsession. It has one of the best patterns for the spring season with lots of thick foliage and greenery. It was adopted by the National Wild Turkey Federation as their official camouflage.

Camo in Everyday Fashion

If you want to identify as a hunter in your daily life, wear camo. If you want to make a fashion statement, wear camo. There are dozens of different styles of camo that you can wear anywhere, which has made camo a style choice chosen by many.

So many style icons including Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, and especially The Rock can be seen wearing all forms of camouflage. More often than not it is baggy camo jeans with a white tee, or shorts with an oversized camouflage jacket. Wearing camo is extremely popular today.

Children enjoy playing dress-up, especially during Halloween. Fake military uniforms can be purchased at Halloween stores and can be used for dress-up purposes. Anyone can dress up in a uniform for fun at any time of year. However, it is important to keep in mind that you should never impersonate a member of the military, because it’s illegal.
