Step-by-step: How military belt buckles work

Want to make sure you know how to use your military belt buckle correct? Here’s a simple and easy guide!

A military belt buckle can be put on in three simple steps. First, wrap the belt buckle around your waist and position it appropriately. Next, push and tighten the belt through and O-shaped buckle appropriately, finding your ideal tightness. Lastly, examine the look, and make sure its comfortable.

Here’s an easy to follow guide on how to correctly put on your military belt buckle.

The obvious first step is to thread the belt through all the belt loops of your pants, making sure that you are standing up and the pants are fit correctly, not too or sagging. This is important, as forgetting to align the pants with the waist with not allow the blet to do its job correctly. Next, push the end of your military belt through the front loop, making sure it is on the left side of your pants. Then pull your belt through all the remaining loops until the belt is now positioned snugly across your waist.

Make sure that your belt is adjusted so the two rings are aligned just under your belly button and parallel to your hips. Next, make sure your belt is repositioned correctly by giving it a tug, making sure it is strong and that it does not sag down in any way. If your belt is correctly aligned and positioned, you can now push the end of your belt through both rings. This can be done most easily by making sure to use one hand to hold and stabilize the belt and the other to push the belt through the hole.

After this, repeat the process in reverse by looping the belt back over itself on top of the first ring and under the second ring. After this, pull the belt toward your right, making sure it is aligned correctly and is the desired tightness. Assuming that everything feels comfortable, the belt is aligned appropriately with your outfit, and you feel that it’s effectively supporting your uniform pants, the process is now complete.

How to secure the loose end of your belt

In an ideal world, all of your military belts would fit correctly and loose ends would not exist. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and loose ends are a common and nearly unavoidable problem. Here are some potential options if you encounter a loose end on your belt.

The Tuck-Across Approach

This is the simplest method and works best if the loose end is more minor. Simply slide the excess of your belt through the next available belt loop after the buckle. Make sure to pull with a lot of pressure so that the belt is flat and rests on top of itself. If there happens to be a remaining loose end, pin it with a bobby pin.

The Tuck-In Approach

This method allows is effectively in hiding your loose end if you have a longer shirt. It is fairly easily done, and especially applicable for members of the Military.

Begin by holding the end of the belt with tension and parallel to your waist. Once this is positioned correctly, take a bobby pin and pin down the loose end down to the area of the belt right below in order to hold it stably in place. If you do not have access to a Bobby Pin, no worries, there are many other alternative options to keep the loose end of your belt stabilized.

You can also use some loose string, a thick rubber band, and even a hair tie. You can follow the same process, but instead of using the Bobby Pin to hold the loose end down, pull the end of the belt behind itself and straight down. Make sure that it is positioned straight down so that the loose end of the belt is longer, it can rest flat against the front of your leg.

The Knot Method

The knot method simply involves the process of tucking your belt underneath itself and pulling it straight. The first step to this method is to push the tip of your loose end of the belt over the first belt loop on your right-hand side. Make sure that it is tight and well fastened. Next, push the tip of the loose end in between the belt and the waist of your pants, making sure to angle it down from the top edge of the belt.

Pull the tip out from the bottom corner of your belt, and then straight to your right. Doing this allows the loose end of the belt to be twisted around the belt, creating the knot look. This method is a little more complicated but is one of the most effective ways to get the loose ends of the best out of your way for good.
